The founders of Defender Cup were Doug Stewart, Charlie Callison, Johnny Moen, Bill Swanson and Marty Ring.
The inaugural Defender Cup was held in 2007 with Marty Ring the season Champion, with a limited schedule and limited players. Money games were added the next season. Defender Cup was patterned after the FedEx Cup which had just started up.
The actual trophy was found behind Doug's desk in the old AFWA building and was a vintage 1976 Softball trophy for AFGWC. Johnny spiffed it up a little by adding plates for weekly and annual winners and of course replaced the baseball bat with a golf club! Kinda cheesy but that was the point - we wanted it to be cheesy. The trophy has all the annual winners engraved along with the hole-in-one medallions
The Defender Cup name came from the golf game "Defender" and from the old intramural baseball trophy found behind Doug's desk in the old AFWA building.
