Johnny Goodman
13 Jul 2019
It was a warm one out on the links at Johnny Goodman yesterday, but I didn’t think it was as bad as predicted. The competition was definitely warm as we had a three-way tie for first place overall with net 74s. But, as with me putting on my shoes every morning, there can be no ties for first place. So we rolled the dice to start the scorecard playoff. The dice showed a 12, and it was Jake Selph who had low net score on that hole to take the win for the day. Eric and Jim McAleer then tied for second, with Bill Russell taking 4th with a net 76. I believe this is Jake’s first win in DefenderCup competition. Congrats Jake! That makes 13 different winners so far this year. Lenny maintains his lead despite a multi-week absence. How did we let this happen? 😊 We had a rare event on the 11th hole, the dog-let par 5, where Marty put one in from just over 100 yards…to make Eagle! I was not far from Marty when he hit that shot (although I was playing the next hole), and I watched as it landed softly on the mound on the front right of that green. But, for those that are familiar with that hole, it is an uphill shot and you can’t see much of the green from down there in the fairway. I told Marty “nice shot”, and moved on to find my ball. It wasn’t until we got back in the clubhouse that I learned that shot had actually gone in the hole. Way to go Marty! We had another rare moment when, probably just an hour or so later, Jim Barber hit his third shot from 117 yards on the par 5 number 16 and, you guessed it, sunk it for Eagle! I was in the group with JB and was standing on the other side of the fairway watching his shot. This one we got to see all the way. It was a nice high shot that landed just short and just left of the pin, took two or three little hops, then rolled the last foot or two into the cup, just like on TV. Great shot JB!
