BackTara Hills13 Apr 2024Now that was better weather! Guess I never heard the high temp, but must have been close to 80. A little wind. Lots of short sleeves and shorts. Ahh, much better. Plus, we set an all-time record for number of participants in one day for DefenderCup, and could have had more but I didn't have enough tee times, and couldn't get more, so had to turn 3-4 people away. We've already upped the number of reserved tee times for upcoming events, so hopefully another record is coming soon. And just for a frame of reference on how much we've grown. In 2018 we only had 39 different golfers play DefenderCup in the entire year. Compare that to the 48 we had yesterday!
A couple things before I get into the golf. First, want to give a big shout-out to Ryan McAleer for making it like true Masters weekend, as he brought in Egg Salad and Pimento Cheese sandwiches for everyone. Why, I could almost smell the Magnolia blossoms. Thanks Ryan, it was yummy!
Also, a golf range finder was laying with our DefenderCup stuff at the end of the day. If anyone is missing one, and can describe it in enough detail, let me know and I will get it to you. I also let the course know I have it and gave them my number in case it belonged to someone outside of DefenderCup.
Now on to golf. It was a real battle on the leaderboard all day. Saw several names hanging in there, I had no idea who was going to pull it off. But in the end, Gus Cross earned the first place points with his net 64. Gus informed me this was his very first win of his storied DefenderCup career. Well done Gus! Right behind Gus at net 65 was Bill Russell. Bill shot a scratch -2 on the back to take those points. Impressive indeed. Behind Bill we had Jay Collins at 66, and Eddie George at 67 to round out the top 4. Congrats to you all.
In scratch golf it was Matt Kingston that stole the show with an even-par 70. Next was Jake at 74, followed by Bill's 75. We then had a tie between Charlene and Eddie at 77 to close out those points.
Cody Rydberg is still your leader in season points, but Gus shoots up to second, followed by Scooter in third. Right behind them it's Bill Russel and Jay Collins tied for fourth, they are just 13 points behind Cody. In Gross season standings Matt is starting to walk away with things already. But you watch yourself Matt, some of those guys behind you have been known to take some desperate measures for these coveted DefenderCup points! People like Jake, who's second, or Dan in third. And we all know how mean of a guy that Bill Russell (currently in fourth place) is!
We had no Eagles yesterday, but there were 32 birdies by Matt(5), Bill(4), Charlene(3), Jay(2), Eddie(2), Jake(2), Jimmy B., Jeff Groves, Wyatt Groves, Bridget, Scott Jacobs, Max, Rick, Megan, Dylan, Frank Plummer, Dan, Marty, Money and Todd. There were 232 pars, 294 bogies, 175 double-bogies and 131 other.
We had a few new golfers added to the crew yesterday as Jake brought in Chad Palmer, Jeff Groves and Wyatt Groves. Eddie George finally convinced Tara to join us on the course, as she has now recorded her first DefenderCup round. Thanks for joining us you all, hopefully you had a good time and come back again soon. That makes 65 different people that have played this year in points rounds, and we've only played three rounds. Off to a good start, that's for sure.
I want to point out a couple bad things that went good yesterday, and how us all working together made it ok. You know how I hate people showing up late, or 'just in time', I bring it up in these emails all the time. Well, I didn't bring it up in the final email this week, yet we had two people running late, with one guy running real late. Not good. But both of them called into us, let us know what was going on, and we were able to make on-course adjustments to tee times and such. So, although it was a bit chaotic there to get us going, in the end we got everyone out there golfing. That's what communication will do for us. So, although I still need a number of you showing up earlier than you do, when things go awry we can still try to salvage things if you give us a chance. Big thanks to all of those that were flexible and adjusted their routine for me. It is appreciated, and didn't go unnoticed.
This is my plug for making sure everyone knows to show up early enough that you can at least be READY TO GOLF in the scheduled group ahead of planned. Also going to restate how we need to keep up pace of play. This is a big factor in our reputation with all the golf courses. Most of them know us, and we want them to want us back. I need you all to help me in this regard.
Next Saturday we get to do it all again, but at Eagle Hills. Tee times start at 11:00. This week we have room for 56 golfers, so hopefully nobody gets left out. But I still recommend getting in early, you never know how it's going to go. If anyone is willing to be Marshall for Eagle let me know. Don't worry, I'll be there so can train you if you've never done it. Worst part is you need to get there well before first tee time, but you will golf in the last tee time. You do get in the Money Games for free though!
I think that's all I have. Let me know if you have any recommendations on process, rules, software, or anything else. We are always trying to make things better and more efficient, and we never know where that next good idea is going to come from. See ya out there soon!
